Thanksgiving in Santa Fe: Day 6

Standard

The day before Thanksgiving.  A day to prepare what we can in advance of the big cooking, and maybe get some exercise in.  A day to be motivated!

In the morning though, I got a text from Dominic, checking in with Dave’s status. This dent in my sleeping bag on my bed is apparently where Dave has been spending some quality time.

I started to miss Dave a lot, and then slid down the sneaky path of anxiety about the disaster of my apartment when I get back.  I only just moved in barely two weeks before I left for this trip, and there are boxes everywhere.  I’ve been incredibly busy in that short time.  No, no.  Back away from the negative feelings.  You are on vacation, Elise.  Nice things only. Besides, as Dominic pointed out, “You’re in Santa Fe.  You’re not supposed to be stressed.”  Ok.  No problem.  I’ve got this.

I took a shower and got to work making apple crisp.  Of course I was playing music so the kitchen was appropriately dancey. I was feeling better already.  Yay! It took a bit longer for the thing to bake than usual because elevation.  But, it came out looking lovely, if I do say so.

This is not a small apple crisp.

I puttered around a bit, and then got ready for the gym.  It was a big lifting day – squats and deadlifts.  I spend time mathing up my lifts in advance and entering them into the notepad in my phone so I could remember what I was supposed to be doing, and then I walked up. The front desk dude remembered me from Monday, so that was cool.

I was pretty proud of myself for how hard I worked for an hour and a half using equipment I wasn’t used to, no chalk for my deadlifts, and without my trainer Drew.  I heard his voice in my head though, and that helped.  Big big air, screw your feet in, you got this Elise, you’re plenty strong.

At the edge of the parking lot I noticed an entire loaf of bread on the ground. Ok. I also narrowly escaped being backed over by a mail truck as I walked on the sidewalk next to the gas station, so that was fun.

The sun sets quickly this time of year, but it seems like it is even faster here.  I don’t know if it is because the sky is so much bigger, or it is more noticeable because the sunsets are so epic, even when there are clouds.  It is very beautiful, either way, and I am happy to experience one of the things that has resulted in Micah falling so in love with this place.

I got home and flopped into the chair and Micah got to experience firsthand my post-lifting bliss.  I am so sensitive to my own brain chemicals, and big lifts combined with high elevation weirdness left me rather light headed.  I get so derpy and lovey and it is just silly.  I ate most of a container of cottage cheese and took a shower and was human again!

We went to Jinja for supper, since we would be doing big cooking the next day and it made sense to do something easy and fun.

Ooh la la!

We had tea and noodles and everything was lovely.  Our waitress Erika was a delight, and I was just so happy.  Still lifting bliss, I think, but either way it was a beautiful evening.  The breezes across the parking lot were lovely.

So pretty!

So pretty!

We watched The Lego Movie before bed, and that was a perfect end to a day that had started out sort of hard for me, but ended so well.
